1998.267.95.6.Harpoon.displ1998.267.95.6. Early Harpoon display, Pitt Rivers MuseumThis page gives a link to all the annual reports for the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford between 1888 and 2011.

1888 was the first separate Annual Report produced for the Pitt Rivers Collection (as it was then known). Annual reports were produced by each department of the University and were circulated, for much of the period covered, with the University Gazette. The Annual Report is written retrospectively to give an idea of the activities, successes and failures of the previous year.

These were transcribed in the early 1990s but have not previously been made available in this form to the public. They were prepared for the web by Alison Petch (and in the case of 3 from the early 1960s, also partially transcribed) but they have not been proof-read against the originals. If you are using these transcriptions in published work you are advised to check the text against the original publications in case there are any errors.

Note that though this research project concentrates on the second half of the long nineteenth century (for this project defined as being 1850-1920), all of the available annual reports have been provided in full  and events in all the years 1850-2013 have been summarised in year tables here. This is because this information will be very useful to lots of researchers working on the Museum's activities over a wider time-frame. Other parts of this website will look at the much shorter time-frame.
