Known as Bert so presumably Hubert or Herbert. Museum assistant also described as laboratory assistant, later Senior Laboratory Steward, who worked in Department of Geology at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. He started work in the Museum in 1907 and retired in 1957, a total of 50 years service. Colleague to Charles Bayzand [qv] who worked in the Department of Geology, University of Oxford for at least 20 years. A Herbert J. Hambidge is listed in the 1901 census aged 9 born and living in Oxford who is probably the same person. During the First World War he served in the Oxon and Bucks Light infantry according to OUMNH Annual Report, 1915: 5. He was recorded in the 1940 OUMNH annual report as still working at the museum Antiquity LIII 1979 pp 211 and on 'The Sherborne controversy' RHA Farrar /see  here / E.A. Apparently an amateur archaeologist who dug at Wookey Hole, if it is James Arthur Harley then he was one of the three first students on the Diploma course at the Pitt Rivers Museum 1908-9, he was apparently born in Antigua and educated at Harvard University before Oxford University, he was ordained in 1909-10 and held curacies in Leicestershire and Kent [Thanks to D.A. He started his association with the Pitt Rivers Museum from 1922 when he began working as Assistant Inspector Thames Conservancy. He began collecting ethnographic material at an early age.
