Addy was born in Derbyshire. An antiquary and man of letters, he earned his living as a solicitor and had a house in London. He seems to have written and published several folklore related articles including, 'Guising and Mumming in Derbyshire' in Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, Jan.1907, Vol.29, pp.37-39 and 'A Glossary of Words used in the Neighbourhood of Sheffield...' (1888) London, English Dialect Society & Trübner, 1888, Vol.57 He wrote (and published) a good deal about vernacular architecture, folktales, etc. There appears to be a book about him and his family, written by Mary Golden Parkin Addy, (1858-?)(who was his wife), 'A miscellany: Sidney Oldall Addy and family' published by Roffey & Clark, Croydon, 1937 (a copy is held in the Bodleian Library). The notes on the OLIS record say, 'Consists of miscellaneous writings by the editor, her husband, Sidney Oldall Addy, and her daughter, Catherine Greaves Addy.' Hermann Adler was the chief rabbi from 1891, succeeding his father. He was born in Hanover and moved with his family to London in 1845. He attended University College, London and in 1862 he was awarded a Ph.D for a thesis on druidism from the University of Leipzig. William Allan served as a cleric in several parishes in London and Suffolk. In 1887 he was sent out to West Africa by the Church Missionary Society to inspect their work in Sierra Leone, Lagos and Niger. His ethnographic collection handed over to the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1902, when Allan retired from St Mary's and broke up his collection. In 1938 he studied for the Diploma at the Pitt Rivers Museum. From 1948-1953 he was an archaeological advisor to the Sudanese government, and a Lecturer in Egyptology at University College, London. Curator of the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Antiquities at University College London from 1948-1963. Educated at Cambridge University, he was ordained and worked as a curate in Scarborough from 1843. In 1847 he became the domestic chaplain of William Henry Dawnay, seventh Viscount Downe, who presented him with the living of Danby, in the North Riding of Yorkshire which he held until his death. Keen antiquarian with wide interests who published works on folklore and dialect studies. His most famous work was Forty Years in a Moorland Parish(1891) which recorded the people, customs and traditions from around Danby.
