Jigme Sumchen Wangpo Namgyal

Born 1912

 

Taring Se. Personal name Jigme Sumchen Wangpo Namgyal. Born 1912. The eldest son of Taring Raja, who is the elder half-brother of the Maharaja of Sikkim. Was educated at St. Paul's School, Darjeeling, and speaks good English. Received training in machine-gunnery at Gyantse in 1933 and was appointed in the same year as De-tshap (Officiating De-pšn). Was the second in-command of the Trapchi Regiment. Deputed in 1937 to receive a consignment of arms for the Tibetan Government at Kalimpong. Married Rinchen Doma (Mary), a daughter of the late Tsarong Shap-pe. Made a La-chag (Treasurer) in 1938. Is also in-charge of the Public Works Department of the Tibetan Government. Appointed as Assistant in the Tibetan Foreign Bureau in January, 1950. Appointed as the English Interpreter to the Tibetan Mission to China in February, 1950.
