Jigme was the nephew of Raja Taring of Sikkim and had attended St Paul’s School in Darjeeling, India. In 1936 he was a Dëpon (general in the Tibetan army) and was married to Rinchen Dolma (“Mary”) Taring with whom he lived in a small house next to the Tsarong mansion. Both he and his wife spoke fluent English and were friendly with the members of the British Mission. Jigme later became a member of the Tibetan government and the chief architect in Lhasa. After 1959 he continued to work for the Tibetan government-in-exile whilst his wife founded the Tibetan Homes Foundation in Mussorie, Northern India. [CH 2003]
