The Taring family in the chapel of their family house outside Gyantse. Left to right: Taring Raja, Mrs Taring, Jigme Taring, Miss Taring, Shime Taring. The chapel is full of butter lamps and other objects and the walls are elaborately decorated with thangka, as well as apparently being covered with imported wallpaper. They are seated in front of a table which has an offering of barley flour on topn as well as a number of other vessels

Other Information - Description: [Extract from taped interview, Richard Blurton and Mrs Hopkinson] '54 - the elder lady to the left is Mrs Taring, while on her right is Mr Taring; Miss Taring is also seen. The photograph is taken in the Taring's house at lunch - note the fine thang-ka , the butter lamps, the presentation scarves, the images and the torma . On the table note a chang jug with a lump of butter on the spout. Also on the table is a chema , a barley flour and butter sculpture' [MS 10/08/2006]

Other Information - Dates: This photograph may have been taken on January 25th 1928. Hopkinson wrote in his journal letters for this date that he, Dean, Mulligan, Wangdi, Co and Pemba went to the Tering house for lunch and that there were many ceremonies taking place in and around Gyantse at this time in readiness for the Tibetan New Year [A. J. Hopkinson Archive, OIOC British Library, Mss Eur D998/54, Journal Letters from Gyantse and Various Camps, 1927-28, commencing January 25th 1928, Gyantse, page 1]. . Although Hopkinson dined with the Taring's on a number of occasions, this dating corresponds with the sequence of images that seems to exist in Hopkinson's negative album labelled 'F' in the British Museum Collection [MS 12/08/2006]
