There are a total of 399 individuals / groups of individuals / companies associated with the Oxfordshire collections at the Pitt Rivers Museum up to 2007.
Of these, 275 lived for all, or a significant part, of their lives in Oxfordshire [69 per cent]. 97 [24 per cent] lived elsewhere, and 35 [9 per cent] have unknown addresses. A very high percentage, unsurprisingly, lived in the county from which they donated objects.
53 of the 399 are known to have been educated at Oxford University [13 per cent]. This proportion seems quite low, but shows that student links to the University are, perhaps, less important than one might think as determinants for where objects might be given to. In other words, geographical proximity seems more important then where a person was educated, as a reason to collect and / or donate Oxfordshire objects to the Museum. The low percentage also reflects the relative lack of knowledge about most individuals educational background

Clearly a large number of donors give only one object [a range usually from around 40 to 60 per cent with one extreme being only 20 per cent in the 1940s, which was a peak of collecting in Oxfordshire and a maximum of 62 per cent in the first decade of collecting in the 1880s and the 1960s.
