Pot stand, Sudan

This pot stand, from Meroë in Sudan, has been decorated with red slip. A slip is a thin suspension of clay that gives the pot a smoother finish or a contrasting colour. Further decoration can then be scratched or painted on to the slip. In this case, a white lattice decoration has been painted on to the red slip.
