Coin pendant, Albania

This necklace is thought to have been part of a gift from a bridegoom to his bride. The coins are from eighteenth-century Austria. It was collected in the early twentieth century. The recycling of coins to create jewellery is practised all over the world. Coins may have been used in this way as a display of wealth, or because they were aesthetically pleasing, or, if a foreign coin was used, as a taste of the ‘exotic’.
