This silver gilt cross is part of a set of jewellery collected in the
Balkans in the early twentieth century by Edith Durham, a missionary.
A range of religious and cultural beliefs have influenced the jewellery’s
designs. This cross was bought in Bosnia in 1906, where it had been made
by a Catholic silversmith. The silversmith claimed that it contained a
piece of the 'True Cross' (on which Christ was crucified). It was opened
by members of the Museum’s Conservation Department in June 2002
and found to be empty.
