Career Farmer?
Biography Resident of Belper, Derbyshire according to accession book, nothing further is definitely known of him. The 1861 census lists several John Bridges resident in Belper, they are aged between 19 and 64 years of age but no further information is available. A John Bridges of Belper is mentioned in the Derby Mercury 28.12.1881 for providing milk to the Belper Workhouse, so he was presumably a dairy farmer. This would match the artefacts he donated being found on farms. This John Bridges is presumably the same person as the man of the same name who was charged at the Magistrates Clark's office with running away and leaving his children at the Belper Union and stealing clothing for which he was jailed.[Derby Mercury 4.121.1878 issue 8553] Another alternative John Bridges of Belper, millwright [ie probably not the same person] was declared bankrupt at Nottingham [Derby Mercury 9.9.1857 issue 3424. In the Glasgow Herald [!] he is described as a millwright and nail manufacturer [Glasgow Herladn 27.7.1857 issue 5794 [Alison Petch [as part of 'The Other Within' project 2006-9] 05/01/2007]
