Biography Hermann Adler was the chief rabbi from 1891, succeeding his father. He was born in Hanover and moved with his family to London in 1845. He attended University College, London and in 1862 he was awarded a Ph.D for a thesis on druidism from the University of Leipzig. He taught at the Jews' College, London until 1879.
