Career Anthropologist / Teacher / Academic
Biography Diploma student at the Pitt Rivers Museum. Did fieldwork in Solomon Islands and stayed on in Fiji, as Headmaster of a school. In 1912 he returned to Oxford and then did more fieldwork research in Samoa and Tonga before returning to England in 1914. After the war he went to Sri Lanka as Director of Archaeology. In 1929 he retired and moved back to UK where he lectured at University College, London. In 1934 he became Professor of Sociology at Fuad I University, Cairo [Alison Petch [as part of 'The Other Within' project 2006-9] 30/01/2007]
