Large pistols were carried in a holster, and oversized duelling and travelling pistols in a wooden case. However, some guns were made small enough to be carried in the inside pocket of a coat. These pocket pistols, made by Wise of Bristol in the early 19th century, have a rifled barrel for greater accuracy and a ‘boxlock’ flint mechanism, which is positioned in the centre of the gun rather than fixed to side plate. They are inlaid with silver floral motifs and also feature folding safety triggers, which only drop when the gun is cocked.
