Matchlock long gun (1886.1.20)
Made in Delhi in the 18th century, this matchlock gun has its original spare matchcord still wrapped around the stock. The furniture is richly decorated with inlaid ivory and birds and flowers painted in blue-green and gold. Such ornamented weapons were acquired as status symbols rather than for defensive purposes. Indeed, it is unlikely that this weapon has ever been fired.
