Introduction

Listed on the left are various small and magical objects that were kept for luck and protection. Worn on the body or placed at home with other treasured possessions, they were invested with the power to protect their owners from danger and bring good luck. Each charm, jewel or souvenir also holds the memory of a time and a place, from Bronze Age burial rituals and Japanese mythology to 19th-century Parisian fashions.
