Historically, southwestern pottery was made only by women. From
the 1920s the best female potters were encouraged to sign their
work. Nampeyo was a well-known female Hopi potter who died in 1942.
This painted bowl has been signed on the base with her name. It
is thought to have been made by Nampeyo towards the end of her life,
and painted and signed by one of her daughters.
