Red pottery bowl, Malawi

This pot from Malawi has been decorated with an incised pattern below the rim. Although this patterning may be purely decorative, it may also have a practical function, as the patterning allows a firm grip on a handle-less pot and is said by potters to reduce cracking during firing. The bowl was made some time before 1891.
