Medicinial bark, Malaysia

These pieces of bark were originally part of a large medicine basket that belonged to an Iban manang, or shaman healer, from the Sarawak region of Borneo. The basket contained a variety of treatments. These included both charms designed to protect the patient from attacks by evil spirits, and also medicines or remedies which were thought to have medicinal qualities. The lawang bark falls into the latter category – it was believed to prevent colic.
