Brooch, United Kingdom

As well as fastening clothes, brooches and pins – especially those with fossils, stones, or teeth incorporated into them – can also be worn for protection or decoration. This nineteenth century brooch is made of jet onto which a fossil shell called ammonite has been mounted. It was probably made in Whitby, Yorkshire.
