Necklace, India

This iron chain from India is decorated with hanging miniature weapons and tools. It may well be an amulet, with protection being provided by the power of weapons and tools, and by iron, which is thought to protect the wearer against evil spirits. These miniatures may also have religious significance. Hindu gods are often portrayed carrying the various tools or weapons with which they are associated – for instance, Vishnu is often depicted with a club and discus. The necklace also perhaps reflected the role or occupation of the wearer, by displaying miniature versions of his or her tools.
