'Kidney-shaped' shield (1884.30.43)

AustraliaAustralia'Kidney-shaped' shield, Australia, Oceania. Part of the Pitt Rivers Museum Founding Collection. Given to the Museum in 1884.

Kidney-shaped shields are one of the best-known Aborginal artefacts of the tropical rainforests of northern Queensland. This example may have come from the region around the Herbert River in the Far North of the state. Various groups, such as the Djirbalngan and Dyirbal peoples, used them in battle with missile weapons such as spears and throwing sticks.
