Turkish gunmakers did not make much use of the wheel-lock, moving directly from the matchlock to the Spanish miquelet (patilla) mechanism. This is an 18th-century example of a converted match-to-miquelet weapon, which is missing its ramrod and flint.
In the West, guns generally became plainer and more utilitarian but the Ottomans continued to delight in surface decoration well into the 19th century. This example is ornamented with brass, mother of pearl, silver, and red textile.
