Bateman, Thomas; Biography: Described as 'an English antiquary and barrow-digger'. Thomas Bateman was born in Derbyshire, the son of the amateur archaeologist William Bateman [qv]. After the death of his father in 1835, Bateman was brought up by his grandfather, and he helped run the family estate, in the course of which he became interested in archaeology. From following website: 'After the death of Thomas' son, the collection came under the Court of Chancery with the expectation that most of the collection would be put up for public sale. However, it was recognised that Sheffield should be offered a portion of the collection, that relating to 'local' interest. On December 30th, 1892, the city of Sheffield and its Museum were given the purchase price of £1,610 ... the 'local' collection was purchased by the City of Sheffield early in 1893. ... However, many of Britannic Division precious items such as coins and jewellery do not appear in the Sheffield collection and were probably sold at public auction.' Blackmore, Humphrey Purnell; Biography: Humphrey Purnell Blackmore was one of the honorary curators of the Blackmore Museum in Salisbury which opened in 1867 and was founded by his brother, William Henry Blackmore. The items come from Kent and a Cecil Brent is listed in the 1901 census as being aged 73, born in Canterbury, Kent, and retired from the civil service in Somerset. Someone is also listed as living at 37 Palace Grove, Bromley, Kent with this name, who was an FSA, so is probably the same person. Another journal gives his address as 1, Denmark Villas, Widmore Road, Bromley. This might be the same person; he was then living in Bromley. He seems to be the person mentioned in the Bristol Mercury 16.12.1876 issue 4524 who sent a collection of bronze celts and Roman artefacts to the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society's soirée in Clifton 13.12.1876.
