during Lienhardt's fieldwork was Ranald Boyle, who served in the Sudan Political Service in Gogrial from 1948 until 1953 and was known by his Dinka ox-name as tim atiep or the shading-tree, which in turn is a metaphor for the black macar cattle colouring.
