Description:

Two younf women walk towards the camera in the foreground, one with her hand on the other's shoulder, whilst a gathering of other dancers are visible around them. Dances were significant occasions for courtship among Nuer youth in which war play played a conspicuous part, where initiated youths of differing villages faced each other in mock running battles as a show of group prowess. The people are described as Western Jikany and in related images as Jikul, the latter being a lineage or clan name not associated with one particular tribal territory, but which was a significant lineage among the Western Jikany.
