Other Information:
This image was almost certainly taken at the same time as some other images of the 52/2 series, such as 1998.341.459, .461, .483, all of which are of Bukuru men.
[Chris Morton 10/12/2003] The Bukuru (also spelt elsewhere in the handlist Bakuru) people are almost certainly the (A)buguru or Babukur people mentioned in E.
E.
Evans-Pritchard's The Azande (OUP 1971), in particular on p.35 where he states 'Another people now completely under Zande domination are the Bantu Abuguru (Babukur), though they still speak Liguru as well as Zande.
One section of them occupies the crest of the Nile-Congo divide between the eastern sources of the Sueh and the sources of the Meridi, and another occupies a stretch of country in the valley of the Sueh to the north of Yambio, the Azande having driven a wedge between the two sections...they were first subjugated by Renzi and Bazingbi, sons of Yapati.' In C.G.
& B.
Seligman's Pagan Tribes of the Nilotic Sudan (London, Routledge 1932, page 464) a table of physical measurements is presented that indicates that Evans-Pritchard supplied them with, amongst others, cephalic index data for five individuals of the Bukuru people.
It is possible that the individual in this image was measured as part of E-P's data gathering for the Seligman's survey of Sudan ethnic groups.
This is further substantiated by the fact that there are only five images in the Zande collection described as Bukuru types.
