Description:
A full length portrait of a Zande woman in the entrance to a homestead, wearing coiled metal arm and ankle rings and leaf pubic covering on a string. Set to both sides of the entrance are two shields leaning against the fence, which is made from stalks etc. The shield to the left seems to have a throwing knife placed on top of it. Buchta made an excursion to the groups west of the Nile in 1879 setting out from Juba on 7th July and returning there on 26th August.

Thomas' article 'Richard Buchta and Early Photography in Uganda' Uganda Journal Vol. 25, no. 1, 1960, p. 116, he notes that 'Buchta seems to have remained at Lado until on 7 July he set off for Makaraka whence he returned on 26 August.
