Description:
A group portrait of five Zande men standing around a buffalo-shaped wooden slit gong, used at dances.
Two of the men are holding fringed, wicker-work shields.
One is holding a long curved throwing knife, and has a large feather headdress.
The Makaraka (this name for the Zande of the Odio area seems to be of Mittu origin) were part of the Zande kingdom and speak a dialect of the Zande language.
Buchta made his excursion to Makaraka country setting out from Juba on 7th July and returning there on 26th August 1879.
