Major P. M. Larken, the District Commissioner for Yambio District (1911-1932), with his arm around a woman (identified as Nataberelims with her child. In front of them is a carved stool, and in the background a sleeping hut (type known as gbuguru).

In The Azande (OUP 1971, page viii) E. E. Evans-Pritchard notes that 'I pay tribute also to the researches of an old and lamented friend, Major P.M. Larken, who spent over twenty years among the Azande of the Sudan and spoke their langauge fleuntly.' Also on page 421, he adds a note about 'My old friend Major P. M. Larken, who administered the Azande for over twenty years, first in Tembura District and then in Yambio District of the Bahr al-Ghazal Province of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan...' Larken published several articles in Sudan Notes and Records, including 'Zande Notes' (1923); 'An Account of the Zande' (1926) & 'Impressions of the Azande' (1927), as well as an article 'Notes on the Azande of Tembura and Yambio, 1911-1930' in Leich, T.A.T. (ed) Zande Background (Equatoria Projects Board, Nzara, 1955)
