March 13 H.F. Walters dies aged 69 (still at work as his service had been extended from 65 to 70 years of age by University). He had worked at the PRM for over 30 years and was succeeded by his son K.H. Walters Annual Report 1961-62

September 30 Penniman's expected date of retirement as Curator, he was asked by the Committee on the Review of Activities to extend his service for a further year. The previous requirement for the Curator to have a 7 year rolling appointment was removed so the post was permanent and it was ranked as the equivalent of a full Professor Annual report 1960-61
