Hamilton-Gray, John; Biography: Based at Carntyne in Scotland. He succeeded to the Carntyne estate in 1833 on the death of his father. As the following website relates: 'vicar of Bolsover and Scarcliffe in Derbyshire; twenty years rural dean of Chesterfield; and afterwards rector of Walton-le-Wold. He was a celebrated genealogist, and an accomplished scholar. His lady, also of an ancient Scotch family, holds a high place in literary circles as authoress of "A History of the Roman Emperors," "A Tour to the Sepulchres of Etruria," and other distinguished works. The reverend gentleman died in London, April 1867, and lies buried with his ancestors in the crypt of Glasgow Cathedral.' Nothing is known for certain of this owner. Pitt-Rivers obtained 7 objects from Hart in Reigate which form part of the founding collection. Hasluck, Ernest Edward; Biography: Only one Hasluck is listed in the 1901 census as living in [Sixpenny] Handley, it seems likely that he is the match. He was a Church of England clergyman who lived at Handley Vicarage aged 42. By 1915 they have moved to Warren House, Caversham, Reading. His son (who died at Gallipoli) was born in 1888 in Handsworth Birmingham which was Ernest's family home, between Island Road, Sandwell Road, Oxhill Road and Sandwell Road and was eventually demolished in 1930. Hayter is listed in the 1891 census as living in Farnham Dorset, a married agricultural labourer aged 27, this is probably the same person as is listed in the 1901 census as being aged 37, now described as a 'domestic gardener', born in Woodcutts, Dorset and then living in Berwick St John Entire, Wiltshire. Hendley, Thomas Holbein; Biography: Surgeon Major in the Indian Medical Service from 1869, his highest rank was Surgeon-Colonel. Obviously very interested in ceramics, enamelling and lacquerwork as he gave some lacquered objects to Pitt-Rivers and also published 4 books about Indian art. He served in Jaipur from 1873-1897 and from 1894-7 he was Administrative Medical Officer for Rajputana. In 1897 he was appointed Inspector-General of Hospitals for NW Provinces and in 1898 the same post for Bengal, he retired in 1903. He was Honorary Secretary of the Economic and Industrial Museum at Jaipur. Hiscock, Francis Rogers; Biography: Farmer at Rookery Farm, Farnham on Cranborne Chase. The following website states: "Rookery Farm is next to the Larmer Tree Gardens owned by General Pitt-Rivers and which in the 1890's was the scene of revolutionary entertainment events which Francis must have attended. My ancestor was certainly invited to one of the General's events as his name appears on the guest list from the Pitt- Rivers collection. General Pitt-River was a paternalist of the old-school Victorian nature and took an interest in educating children of local labourers and gypsies. Francis was a tenant farmer on Pitt-River's land and we have copies of his rent payments schedule in the late 19th century. ... I do not know how Francis came to meet Emily Riman when he was from East Stour and she from Handley ... However they met ... and ... travelled to the USA to marry when she was just 17 and he 22. They then returned to Handley working in the timber trade which he probably developed in the USA. They later settled at Rookery Farm (a farm with an attachment to the Chase woods and timber trade) nearby where they would remain for the next 20+ years." Hunt, Mrs Edgell; Biography: Apparently had a collection of Oceanian, Australian and South American ethnography. The items were obtained via George Fabian Lawrence [qv]. Nothing further is known of her. It is just possible that she is Emily Priscilla Edgell Hunt who died in 1898 (when Lawrence sold the objects to Pitt-Rivers, so her possessions might have been sold on by her relatives); on the other hand she might also be the wife of Herbert Edgell Hunt who was an engineer / railway engineer and died in 1896.
