Walter Baldwin Spencer (1860-1929) was a famous anthropologist in Australia and a Professor of Biology at the University of Melbourne. Before he moved to Australia he spent some time working on the Pitt-Rivers' founding collection during its transfer to Oxford from the South Kensington Museum.
This article by Alison Petch describes this work. It was first published in the Journal of Museum Ethnography, no 21 (March 2009) pp. 254-265. We are very grateful to the Chair of MEG and the Editor of JME for permission to publish this pdf on our website.
