Zu cup, India

This large cup is from Nagaland in Northeast India. It was carved from hollowed-out bamboo, and was designed to contain zu, or rice beer. It was made some time before 1924. Rice is the staple food in Nagaland, and rice beer is a popular, nourishing, mildly alcoholic drink. The consumption of rice beer formed an indispensable part of many ceremonies, sacrifices, festivals, and feasts.
