Kava cup, Hawaiian Islands

This cup from the Hawaiian Islands was designed to hold kava. Kava is a drink made from the root of a plant of the pepper family. It is enjoyed for its mildly narcotic properties, and is consumed in Hawaii, Fiji and elsewhere at kava ceremonies, as well as on informal occasions. It was made some time before 1874.
