Coiled pot, USA

This pot has been hand-built using the coiling method. This technique involves coiling rolls of clay into a pot shape. The surface of this pot has not been smoothed over, leaving the coils visible. However, vessels like this one would usually be finished by smoothing and scraping. It is possible that the spiral building process used to make baskets was the inspiration for the coiling technique. This pot was made some time before 1926.
