This object is a bu’kuto, or ‘wooden sword’.
Bu’kuto were worn, suspended from the belt, by medical
practitioners as emblems of their profession – they sometimes
contained lancets or knives for cutting herbs. This example is carved
in to the shape of a bean pod and has been decorated with representations
of insects. It was made some time before 1902.
