Headband, Bosnia

This headband from Bosnia was worn around a flat cap. It forms part of a set of jewellery from the Balkans collected in the early twentieth century. Many of these pieces of jewellery were designed to protect against the ‘evil eye’. The concept of the evil eye can be traced back to the fourth millennium BC, and is still found all over the world. The evil eye, or the jealousy or envy of another person, can be deflected by shiny objects. Turquoise, used to decorate the headband, is also thought to provide protection.
