Strainer, Peru

This strainer was collected amongst the Huambisa or Aguaruna people in Peru. It is made from a fruit shell, and was used in the preparation of a drink called masato. This intoxicating drink was made by women – its preparation involved chewing yucca roots and spitting them into a large pot of water in which they then fermented. After fermentation, the liquid was strained using a strainer like this one. The strainer was made some time before 1923.
