Anklet, Tanzania

Anklets were often worn in pairs in Africa. Anklets like this one from Tanzania decorated with copper bells were worn by girls at dances. It was collected amongst the Taveta in or before 1904. Elsewhere in Africa, the number and size of bells attached to anklets indicated social status.
