Bead drill, South Africa

This tiny fine-pointed drill was used to drill a hole in the centre of ostrich egg-shell beads. Beads made from ostrich egg shells are amongst the earliest known examples of African jewellery. Such beads are still made in parts of east Africa today. It is not known when this drill was made. It was collected some time before 1936.
