Beadwork belt, Solomon Islands

In many cultures beads have been used as currency. In the Solomon Islands in the Pacific, belts of shell beads, like this one from San Cristoval, were used to make marriage payments, to pay fees and fines, and to buy canoes and pigs. However, the belts were also designed to look attractive and to be worn on special occasions.
