A mail horse arriving at
Gyantse Dak Bungalow. The Political Officer F. M. Bailey wanted to speed up communications between Sikkim and
Gyantse and tried to institute a motorised mail service, which Hopkinson was given responsibility for overseeing. However, it did not succeed and the horse service remained a principal mode of transporting correspondence between Gangtok and the various Trade Agencies in Tibet. In this photograph the mail bags can be seen strapped to the saddles of two ponies entering
Gyantse dak bungalow compound
