Notes on album mount - "Phari Dzong" written in pencil below the photograph on the album page. [KC 11/1/2006]
Other Information - Setting: F Spencer Chapman writes in Lhasa: The Holy City , 1940, London: Readers Union Ltd, p.34, "Most writers agree that Phari is a bleak and filthy place with no redeeming feature except its superb surroundings. In the afternoon I went to look at the fort. The roads are deep in mud and dung ... There are great piles of dung on all sides. ... The streets themselves are so choked with the accumulated garbage of centuries that they are many feet higher than formerly and in most cases actually obscure the ground-floor windows; when leaving the road to enter the courtyards round which most of the houses are built on steps down a considerable distance."
