Manual Catalogues - Bell's List of Illustrations entry: "[No. of chapter] XLIV. [Subject of Chapter] Reting [Subject of Illustration] Q216 (f) Our camp at Phondo. My tent is the one on the left of the two larger white ones in the centre, with the verandah raised. In the background is the village of Phondo, built under the cliff. See Diary XII p. 46."
Other Information - Setting: Bell's Diary entry for 28th August 1921: "The elevation of Phon-do [tibetan transcription] is 13,500ft (13,600 by aneroid, 13,300 by ?meter height, increasing it by 200 ft). The temperature in my miniature Swiss Cottage tent, ten ft by eight ft, rose to 78 degrees in the day and descended to 38 degrees at night" [Diary Vol. XII, p.46]
Other Information - Historical Background: At the end of August Sir Charles Bell and Robert Kennedy went on a tour of the country north of Lhasa to Reting monastery. This photograph was taken on this trip [MS 17/9/2004]
