'Portrait of the Dalai Lama', Sir Charles Bell, London: Collins, 1946 [view list of illustrations]
Bell's List of Illustrations entry for H.217: "[No. of chapter] XXXVII. [Subject of Chapter] Omens and Signs [Subject of Illustration] H.217 (d) The Mongolian giant at the Gutor, emblematic of strength, prosperity and logn life, with his children, Indian, Brahmins and skeletons who guard cemeteries. In the top verandah is the Dalai Lama and below him the Shappes"
Other Information - Related Images: Bell does not distinguish in his list of illustrations between 1998.285.250 and 1998.285.251 but it would appear that 1998.285.251 is the image to which the caption for H.217 refers as 1998.285.250 depicts other performers in the masquerade [MS 8/6/2004]
Contemporary Publication - Published in 'Portrait of the Dalai Lama', Bell, C. A., London: Collins, 1946, facing p.256:"Mongol giant with Brahmin children."
