Description:
A Mandari smith beating a socketed axe-head that has been heated in a fire, using a heavy tool held in the right hand. Other men sit around him under the shelter looking on. Although iron deposits were not known or exploited in Mandari country, the working of traded iron was practised by smiths, who manufactured or reworked a range of weapons.
