Description:
Small vessel made from a gourd, with the neck cut off at is base to make a narrow opening on a squat globular body with convex sides and slightly flattened base.
The surface is an orange colour (Pantone 7511C).
The inside of the mouth has been burnt partially black, and the exterior walls covered with a closely spaced geometric design burnt in using heated blades (Pantone Black 7C).
This extends from the edge of the rim to the edge of the base, and consists of 4 groups of vertical lines spaced equally around the body, with each group being made up of 8 lines.
This divides the body into quarters, and each has been filled with a similar pattern.
At the centre of each is a vertical band made up of from 7 to 9 lines, with an oval cut over the top and bottom of the group.
This has been enclosed in a roughly leaf-shaped area, bordered by a series of 3 parallel scalloped lines, then around this, are 5 further sets of scalloped lines that follow the same shape.
The vessel is complete and intact, and has a weight of 25.3 grams, height of 85 mm, rim diameter of 23 by 22 mm and body diameter of 109.5 mm.
Collected by Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton and his wife Hannah on 13th May 1933 at Luklun, during a shooting expedition. Luklun would appear to be located in either the El Buheyrat or Warab districts of the southern Sudan. It has the local name odomo, as was used as a container.
