Description:
Thick brass armlet made from a single rod, oval in section, slightly flattened on the inner face, and bent into an oval loop with open ends, 22 mm apart.
Each end has been cut flat, and has a slight raised ridge on the top edge where the metal has spread under pressure.
The surface has largely been polished smooth, but there are some large depressions on the outside of either arm, possibly where the blacksmith has hammered the sides of the object to bend it into shape.
There are some smaller peck or hammer marks on the inner face, where the metal also has some cracks.
The colour is currently a shiny metallic brass (Pantone 872C).
Length across armlet 103 mm, width 78 mm, length across inside edges 65 mm, width of rod used to make object 20.3 mm, height 22.6 mm and weight 590.6 grams.
Collected by Jack Herbert Driberg in Uganda, North of Lake Kyoga, and donated to the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1925. These arm ornaments were worn by both men and women; museum records do not state the Lango name for this type of object.
The object is currently on display in the Lower Gallery, case 111A.
