Basket, of pandanus, from Tonga; part of the Forster collection (Forster 175; 1886.1.1322)

Basket of purse-like form made from a double thickness of plaited pandanus leaf. The outer layer of the basket is more finely plaited, the wide palm-leaf strips that make up the inner layer and the flap of the basket having been split into four to make this layer.
